Barbican Sculpture Court transformation given green light
The one-acre courtyard, located above the Barbican Concert Hall and surrounded by the curved Frobisher Crescent, is set to undergo a major restoration as part of the wider Barbican Renewal programme.
Designed by architects Allies and Morrison alongside engineers Buro Happold, the project will introduce step-free access throughout the Sculpture Court, alongside new seating, improved lighting, upgraded event infrastructure and clearer wayfinding.
New climate-resilient planting will also be incorporated into the landscape, with the redesign intended to create a more welcoming space for visitors while retaining the distinctive Brutalist character of the Grade II* listed setting.
The Sculpture Court was originally designed as a place where art and architecture could form part of everyday life at the Barbican. The renewed space will once again support exhibitions and events, including the Centre’s outdoor cinema programme, while providing more areas for visitors to meet, sit and spend time outdoors.
The project has also received £147,000 in development funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This will support the next stages of detailed design, heritage research and community engagement ahead of an application for further funding.
The transformation forms part of a much wider programme of improvements across the Barbican Centre. The City of London Corporation has committed £191 million towards the £231 million required for the 2025 to 2030 phase of Barbican Renewal.
This phase will also see work carried out across areas including the foyers, Lakeside Terrace and Conservatory, alongside upgrades to building systems and services.
Major works affecting the Sculpture Court, foyers and Lakeside spaces are expected to take place from June 2028. During this period, the Barbican plans to stage performances, exhibitions and events at locations elsewhere across London.
The renewed Sculpture Court is scheduled to open to the public in 2030, ahead of the Barbican Centre’s 50th anniversary in 2032.
