Costain set to deliver major South Kensington Tube station upgrade
Transport for London (TfL) has notified Costain of its intention to award the infrastructure company the design and build contract for the project through its Infrastructure Improvement Framework.
The upgrade will introduce step-free access throughout the station, covering all platforms, the ticket hall and the pedestrian subway connecting passengers with nearby museums.
A dedicated eastbound platform for the Circle and District lines will also be brought into use, while heritage features across the existing platforms will be restored.
South Kensington is one of the capital’s busiest visitor destinations, serving tens of millions of passengers each year and providing access to landmarks including the Natural History Museum, as well as nearby hospitals and Imperial College London.
The improvements are expected to increase capacity and reduce overcrowding, while making the station significantly more accessible for wheelchair users, passengers travelling with buggies and those with other mobility requirements.
Costain will work alongside TfL, Native Land and Places for London as wider development takes place around the station.
Construction is expected to begin later in 2026, with the station improvements scheduled for completion in 2031, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the Natural History Museum.
The project follows Costain’s recent appointment to TfL’s £700m Infrastructure Improvement Framework and builds on the company’s previous work across London’s transport network.
