LGBTQ Community: 7 Architects who raise the pride and design flag high
Renowned architects and interior designers from the world over are not just dedicated to creating unique buildings or furnishing beautiful homes'they also believe in doing their bit for the LGBTQ community. Since the Pride Month is upon us, we decided to list of 7 such global design personalities.
LGBTQ Community: Jane Greenwood
Greenwood is a principal at Kostow Greenwood Architects in New York City. She is a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights and is the co-founder of the 'Organization of Lesbian + Gay Architects and Designers.' In 2017, Greenwood was named one of 'Out' magazine's 100 most influential LGBT people and a 'woman of influence' by the 'New York Business Journal.'
LGBTQ Community: Tom Guy
Guy is the founder of Guy Piper Architects in London. His firm focuses on residential and hospitality architecture. Guy is also very active in the LGBTQ community. He is the founder of the business and social group 'Architecture LGBT+' and the founder of 'National Student Pride,' which supports LGBT+ students in the UK.
LGBTQ Community: Gauthier Destenay
Destenay is a Belgian architect who is the husband of the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel. In 2015, Bettel became the first European Union head of government to marry a same-sex partner. Destenay has been working as an associate architect at Belgian firm A3 Architecture since 2013. This architecture firm is known for both its public and private works; they believe in creating environmentally-sustainable designs.
LGBTQ Community: Nate Berkus
Berkus is a Chicago-based interior designer. He became a household name after his appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Since then, Berkus has had his own TV shows, written two New York Times bestselling books and has developed numerous product lines. In 2014, Berkus and fellow designer Jeremiah Brent were the first same-sex couple to marry at the New York Public Library. He and his husband actively support pro-LGBTQ initiatives and advocate it openly in their interviews.
LGBTQ Community: Ben Campkin
Campkin lectures at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London and is also the director of UCL's Urban Laboratory initiative, and was one of the co-founders of UCL's cross-faculty LGBT and queer research network. LGBTQ Community: J'rgen Mayer H
Mayer H. is a German architect and artist. He is the founder of J. Mayer H. Architects in Berlin. The firm focuses on international developments that are a mix of architecture, communication, and new technology. Some of his famous projects include Metropol Parasol in Spain, Mensa Moltke in Germany and Danfoss Universe in Denmark.
LGBTQ Community: Carlos Huber
Huber is a Mexican Architect who is greatly inspired by historical objects and buildings such as Palace of Versailles and the works of Theodore Gericault. Huber moved to New York in 2006 to study historic preservation at Columbia University. Recently, he launched Arquiste, a line of perfumes, which reflect his love for historical elements.
