Populous appointed to explore new leisure destination around London Stadium
London Stadium has appointed architecture practice Populous to develop early-stage proposals for Stadium Island, the area of land surrounding the former Olympic venue within Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Populous, which originally designed the stadium for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and later worked on its transformation into a multi-purpose venue, will explore how the surrounding land could support new leisure and mixed-use development.
The £248,000 appointment will see the practice develop spatial proposals based on an existing feasibility study, with the initial work expected to run for 12 months and an option to extend into January 2028.
CBRE has also been appointed as commercial consultant on the project. The firm will develop a business case, advise on the viability of potential development and support early engagement with the market.
Detailed plans have yet to be revealed, with the project currently focused on establishing what could be delivered across the available land.
A London Stadium spokesperson said the work would explore opportunities to further enhance the stadium and its setting at the heart of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The appointment comes as Stratford continues to develop as a major leisure and cultural destination. The wider Olympic Park is now home to venues including ABBA Voyage, Sadler’s Wells East, V&A East Storehouse and other developments forming part of the East Bank cultural quarter.
London Stadium has operated as a multi-purpose venue since its post-Olympics transformation, hosting football, athletics, rugby, baseball and major live music events alongside its role as the home of West Ham United.
The Stadium Island proposals remain at an early stage, with further details expected as Populous and CBRE develop the design and commercial options for the site.
