Building Control Surveyor,

In 2020, I graduated with a Building Surveying degree. When I signed up three years prior, I had no clue how scarce females were in the industry. We had a total of 200 students, 20 being females. I thought this disparity was odd and spent my years wondering why this could be. Shockingly, my friends had assumed I was going to be a builder, since I’d be training in the construction industry. Regardless, I decided to write my final year dissertation about the construction industry’s macho culture and associated risk-taking behaviour. After many months of researching, I understood that the industry’s general perception and misrepresentations may have a role in this disparity. As a working female in the industry – especially when attending site – there have been many instances where I have felt like I don’t belong. The first time I felt this was the moment I aspired to change the industry’s perception, firstly via spoken communication with those closest to me. As a result, I feel would make me a perfect ambassador for Women in Construction.
