Sustainability & Carbon Lead, SCS Railways

Athina is a Sustainability and Whole Life Carbon consultant for the built environment, trained as a civil engineer with a keen interest in the environmental performance of built assets since early on. Specialised in LCA for construction, she has over 10 years of hands-on experience in GHG emissions over the life cycle of projects and a strong track record in developing, pitching and coordinating delivery of carbon mitigation solutions.

Currently leading on Sustainability & Carbon for the HS2 London Tunnels, Athina covers carbon and resource management, including both robust quantification and reporting as well as driving implementation of appropriate actions to reduce impacts and enhance environmental performance. Athina co-shapes the sustainability strategy & governance for the project, sets the respective areas of priority and coordinates relevant liaisons at all levels, ranging from senior management steering to briefing of various different teams, as well as externally with peers and the supply chain.

She is currently managing the REAL feasibility study with a specialist team of partners on developing a circular solution for producing a cement alternative using soil arisings from excavation operations.

Athina is involved with national and international forums on built environment decarbonisation, with particular focus on whole life sustainability assessment. She is the lead author of the RICS PS on Whole Life Carbon for the built environment – currently part taking in its upcoming revision and an active contributor to the European standardisation committee for sustainability assessment in construction (CEN TC 350).

Athina comes with strong overarching acumen of sustainability affairs and is passionate about systems thinking and effective collaboration for a holistic approach, robust yet practicable carbon measurement for projects, usable & insightful carbon reporting, consistency and accessibility of carbon information, digitalisation, integrated and efficient workflows & innovative technologies with particular focus on decarbonisation of concrete and construction site activities.
