My passion for creating environmentally and socially sustainable places drives me to continually look for new approaches to solve design challenges. Understanding the relationship between buildings, the surrounding context and climate is central to the development and design of successful places that support human wellbeing, comfort and enjoyment. We, as building design professionals, have the responsibility to bring digital innovation and research in decision-making to build a symbiotic relationship between humans, built environment and natural systems.

Avgousta Stanitsa is a qualified architect, working as an Associate Design Researcher within the Building Design Research & Innovation team in Atkins. She holds an MSc in Sustainable Environmental Design from AA School of Architecture in London. She has also completed her PhD studies in big data, risk and environmental analytical methods within Cranfield University, exploring how design of a space impacts human experiences and how novel approaches could be leveraged to inform decision-making processes in design. Her research interests include user experience, digital innovation and sustainable environmental design, leading a number of research initiatives and service offerings for clients on a wide range of projects and sectors, including education, landscape and masterplanning, with a focus to better understanding how the built environment shapes people’s experiences.
