Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Kier Construction

Growing up I was raised by a single mother who was a Project Manager in another male dominated industry who always encouraged me to never be afraid to do something if I wanted to do it. I was never the brightest in school, but I worked hard, got good grades and that’s what mattered. COVID-19 forced me away from the traditional route of going to uni straight out of College. I worked in a supermarket throughout the pandemic where I started my Level 4 Retail Management Apprenticeship. I finished the apprenticeship and moved to a different sector of retail, who sold trade tools, accessories and hardware products. I had to learn about the DIY side of construction to help advise customers, from this I found a real interest in construction. I was searching for apprenticeships in construction as I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do and information on careers in construction had never been made readily available to me. I found a few Quantity Surveying Apprenticeships, applied and eventually I got my current job that I am very grateful for. I have learnt so much so far and know I have a long way to go, but if I didn’t have my mum encouraging me, I wouldn’t be here today.
