Fire Safety Assurance Lead, Houses of Parliament Restoration & Renewal
Dr. Graham Smith is a Chartered fire safety engineer with 23 years of experience in industry across many sectors, including power, transport, education, shopping complexes and heritage in the UK and abroad.  He is head of fire safety at Jacobs UK Ltd and has acted as the fire safety assurance lead for the Palace of Westminster’s restoration and renewal programme since 2019.  Graham has written standards for Heathrow airport and for parliament and he is a committee member of the internal fire safety standard (IFSS) working group, which was inaugurated at the UN in Geneva. His previous projects include leading the fire design for nuclear new-build, doubling the size of terminal 2 at Manchester Airport and major renovations in Leeds City Varieties.  Graham has contributed to safety case development for rail and aviation projects and is currently developing a current good practice fire safety assurance model, in the context of the Building Safety Act, for the Palace of Westminster so that fire risk is as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).
