Senior Quantity Surveyor, Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd
I am an experienced Quantity Surveyor with over 13 years' experience in construction. I joined the industry in 2006, having completed a first-class honours BA degree in Tourism & Heritage Management, and been unhappily employed in hospitality management, in a temporary administration role within the procurement department of Mansell Construction Services. Short-term became long-term, temporary became permanent, admin' became buying and buying became surveying, all within the space of 2' years. Although I stumbled into it by accident, I found a genuine enjoyment in the industry and have now spent a decade working as a site-based QS on a range major projects for tier 1 main contractors, including Admirals Quay; Southampton's tallest residential development right on the waterfront at Ocean Village. I have recent joined Sir Robert McAlpine & Integrated Health Projects to work on a multi-million-pound healthcare scheme for Dorset NHS. I underwent my academic training on a part-time day-release basis whilst working, and graduated in 2012 with a first-class honours BSc degree in Construction Management from Southampton Solent University. Working as a Senior Quantity and project commercial lead, I have full commercial control of the project and the commercial project team, as well as working closely with production, design, HSEQ, planning, pre-construction and accounts staff. My day to day role includes cost control, budgeting, cash flow management and financial reporting on project progress to both senior managers within my organisation, and to the Client team. I manage the Client, subcontract and supplier packages at all stages of the project, including design review and value engineering, contract negotiation & preparation, valuations, payments and final account negotiations. During my time within the industry I have also had the privilege of being a top-8 finalist in the 2017 European Women in Construction & Engineering Awards, working on the management committee of Bouygues UK's women's network; Welink which included presenting to the Group Chairman on actions to close the gender pay gap, and qualifying as a CITB/Go Construct Construction Ambassador to inspire potential new entrants about the industry and is able to convey what it's actually like to work in construction.
