Martin Brown FRSA is a Regenerative Design Provocateur at Fairsnape (Lancashire), Vice President at Living Future Europe, a Living Future Hero, and former Co-Chair of the Longridge Environment Group. Blending a lifelong passion for outdoor exploration with over 50 years of experience in the built environment, Martin is a pioneer and inspirational voice in regenerative thinking—as an advisor, educator, commentator, speaker, and author. He supports, counsels, nurtures, and provokes organisations on their regenerative journeys and discoveries.

In the realm of the Circular Economy, Martin has facilitated, led, and audited circular practices across a wide range of project typologies and scales.

A strong advocate for shifting from extractive practices to regenerative models, Martin blends circular economy principles with indigenous wisdom, calling for a deeper, reciprocal relationship with the Earth. Drawing inspiration from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Honourable Harvest and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s third principle—“restore natural systems”—he calls for a transformative shift away from capitalist frameworks that merely attempt to close material loops. Instead, he champions regenerative reciprocity: integrating gift-economy concepts and commons-based approaches to reshape our understanding of circular systems.

This shift—from a mechanical view of circularity to an ecological understanding of interdependence—where human systems operate as caring participants in Earth's cycles of renewal and regeneration. Regenerative reciprocity means giving back more than we take, respecting natural systems, and recognising that true circularity includes creative, spiritual, and relational dimensions—ultimately helping repair our planetary boundary overshoots.

Whether facilitating design workshops, advising on regenerative masterplans, or leading audits on circularity, Martin’s contributions continue to influence the evolution of sustainability practice across Europe and beyond.

STATEMENT:

"Reconnecting with nature will save our society. The Biophilic Society at LFE is a network (a living system) of biophilic lovers, experts, researchers, professionals aiming and working to set biophilia and biophilic design at the centre of the conversation on regenerative design, creating the conditions for their large-scale implementation."
