Dr Paul Toyne leads the global architecture and urban design practice Grimshaw on sustainability. He oversees their goals of net zero carbon ready designs by the end of  2025 and regenerative designs by 2030. Paul led Grimshaw’s development of www.minoro.org a free online platform that supports buildings owners to reduce carbon emissions in new and existing building projects. Minoro is supported by non-governmental organisations and private companies. Since its launch in July 2024 it has had an impact with 6000 users from 91 countries, with businesses are incorporating it into their carbon management processes

Paul previous international experience in the construction sector covers buildings, infrastructure and urban design projects with LendLease, Balfour Beatty and WSP. Within these company’s Paul has been responsibility for sustainability strategies incorporating carbon management. For example, between 2007 and 2010 Paul lead a carbon emissions reduction of 20%  in LendLease.  

He has been engaged in climate change since the late 1990s – commissioning climate impact reports on species whilst at WWF. In 2005, Paul was appointed by the British Council as a climate change ambassador to promote awareness of climate change. Between 2010-2014, Paul was been a London Sustainable Development Commissioner appointed by the Mayor of London. His work included being part of the advisory group that the established the award winning PAS 2070 (city level supply chain management of carbon) and chair the city’s reporting against the UN SDGs.

Paul is a member of the UK’s Green Construction Board’s infrastructure working group that established another PAS, the PAS2080 – a standard for carbon management in buildings and infrastructure.  

Paul is an elected board member of the British Aviation Group and supports them on their net zero ambitions. He has held non-executive director and advisory positions. Examples related to carbon leadership including working with Climate KIC on reviewing project finance for urban design projects;  advising CIFF on carbon reduction policy mechanisms for the EU cement industry; developing a climate resilience methodology for asset managers in Anglia Water; and Volvo Construction supporter their development of low carbon equipment.
