Paula is a well known advocate of engineers and engineering encourages a diverse workforce suitable for a more sustainable and equitable future.

Paula is the Regional Supervising Officer for Sir Robert McAlpine’s Northern region where she oversees the professional development of future Institution of Civil Engineer members.  She also manages the Social Value for the A19 DBFO Project, is an Employee Representative and sits on several Affinity and leadership groups.

In her 30 years as a Civil Engineer she has undertaken a wide variety of significant roles on significant and high profile projects including the Thames Barrier, Hinkley Point C and DUBAL Aluminium.  Her work had gained her Chartered Fellowships with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Chartered Management Institution (CMI).  In addition she was awarded the prestigious European WICE Award Lifetime in Engineering for 2021.

Paula brought together several other institutions and organisations with mutual aims as Founding Chair of Engineering Together.   She undertakes several voluntary ICE roles including North East Chair, Honorary Editor and Panel Chair of the ICE Proceedings: Civil Engineering and will become a Trustee in November 2021.  She is also an active member of the Tyne and Tees Cluster of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), a North East Apprentice Ambassador and she sits on the North East Chamber of Commerce Transport Forum and the Teesside University Engineering Board.   

Paula truly believes in the power of mentoring and the importance of leadership regardless of your job role or function as we are all role models to someone.
