Rob Wheaton is an Associate Director and architect at Stride Treglown’s Cardiff studio, renowned for his leadership in sustainable, residential, and mixed-use design. A qualified Passivhaus designer, he adeptly guides complex planning processes and champions architecture that’s responsive to context and climate. In 2025 Rob was shortlisted as Sustainability Leader of the Year at the AJ100 Awards for his pivotal role in the Gwynfaen ultra‑low‑carbon housing scheme near Swansea. The 144-home development, guided by Wales’s Well‑Being and Future Generations Act, utilises locally sourced timber, wood‑fibre insulation, and off‑site timber cassettes, forming a kit‑of‑parts system that dramatically reduces embodied and operational carbon. From Gwynfaen emerged Tai ar y Cyd, a groundbreaking sustainability initiative Rob led. Launched in January 2025, the Pattern Book offers social landlords a set of 15 house types that meet AECB CarbonLite or Passivhaus standards, prioritising Welsh-grown timber and MMC Category 2 off‑site construction. It's being adopted by social landlords across Wales to help deliver affordable low‑carbon homes.
