The studio is based in at the RARA collective in East London, which grew out of the 2008 recession and is home to a diverse group of practitioners among them artists, designers and academics.
Prior to this Sarah was an architect at leading practices, Alsop Architects and Foster and Partners, where she worked for approximately four years on International and UK projects such as the visionary Haramain High-Speed Railway which connects the holy cities of Mecca and Medina and the award winning dual use, Headingley Carnegie cricket pavilion, Leeds, on which she worked as a 3D designer. Sarah trained as both an architect and engineer, completing her Part I in Architectural Engineering at the University of Westminster, her Diploma in Architecture at the Architectural Association and Part III at The Bartlett. At the AA Sarah studied under Pascal Schoning, learning to make films, which she has continued to do, making films concerned with the social, historical and political context of architecture.
In 2014 she completed an MA in acting at Drama Centre, Central St Martins, which has informed her practice as an architect, not only by leading to the founding of Appropri8 but also consolidating her interest in narrative and the role of visual and verbal storytelling and communication in architecture.
Sarah is passionate about making architecture a more inclusive profession, which welcomes women and people from all backgrounds.
Through her work with film she aims to give voice to the lesser heard narratives of women in architecture, enabling people to tell their own stories. In 2017 she filmed and directed the documentary, She Draws : She Builds, collaborating with Anna Schabel and Chloe Tayali to interview 15 female architects, reflecting on their careers.
She is now vice chair of the newly reformed Women in Architecture which aims to support, champion and inspire women, enabling them to forge their own paths in architecture.
